Suspicious Package Found at Reenactment
October 15,2017
•••BREAKING NEWS•••
After receiving a threat that "everyone would be harmed" earlier this week, a Civil War reenactment in Middletown, VA has been evacuated. Participants and guests have been moved to a local school and police are still on scene. Unconfirmed reports state that more than one suspicious package has been found. Let's hope this is just a false alarm. More information to come as this story unfolds.
UPDATE: The device(s) was found around 4:15PM, behind a tent in the area known as "Sutler's Row." This area is where re-enacters sell their wares. One of the participants stated the device had a remote triggering mechanism (however, there is not a confirmation of this detail by law enforcement at this time). The remainder of the weekend event, at Cedar Creek, has been cancelled. We will continue to post updates as they become available.
UPDATE 2: After the discover of the device, a Unified Command was set up with the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, Frederick County Fire and Rescue, and Middletown Police Department. Additional resources, specifically the Virginia State Police Bomb Squad, K9 Units from Frederick County, Virginia State Police, as well as, several federal agencies were brought in. Officials stated that the device was rendered safe. Tonight, K9 units will continue their sweeps of the entire battlefield. Authorities have not released any information pertaining to possible suspects or motives.
UPDATE 3: Middletown Police have confirmed at least two devices were found. The first one was discovered in a food tent by a child. The second device was located behind a vendor tent. At least one of the devices was a soda bottle bomb filled with screws. The bomb squad was successful in securing and safely disposing of the device. FBI and other law enforcement agencies are continuing to investigate this incident.
